The Czech University of Life Sciences (CZU) is one of the leading educational and research centres for the agrarian sector, food industry, forestry, timber, environment and ecology, economics and management, informatics, rural and regional development in the Czech Republic. It consists of six faculties (Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources; Operational Economics; Technical; Environment; Forestry and Timber; Tropical Agriculture) and one institute (Education and Counselling). CFA offers bachelor, master and doctoral education for approximately 18,000 students (including about 3,000 international students from more than 100 countries) in various areas of bioeconomy and related sectors. Study programmes and research cover the entire agri-food chain, forestry (including agroforestry) and rural development. The university also provides education in computer science, ecology and environmental studies, natural resource use, landscape conservation and landscape architecture, urban planning or technologies used in the life sciences (agriculture, food and forestry). A special segment of education and research is represented by programmes in tropical agriculture. Approximately one third of the study programmes are taught in English and are attended by more than 2 500 students. The university’s research activities focus on areas that are the focus of the faculties within the bioeconomy. These areas are concentrated in 3 research pillars: healthy lifestyles (forestry value chains, sustainability, cultural landscapes, climate change), healthy nutrition (agriculture and food production and food safety) and quality of life (nature conservation, green technologies, entrepreneurship and rural development). The University promotes cooperation with different actors in society (from business partners to public administrations or NGOs). The University is a member of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS). The CZU participates in international development aid projects in cooperation with research organisations and universities in developing countries, e.g. Peru, Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Kenya, Angola, Egypt, Zambia, Senegal, Cambodia. In the last 10 years, the university has been involved in more than 100 prestigious international research projects. Two excellent research projects have been funded by the government.
CFA is mainly represented in the PPZRS through the Faculty of Tropical Agriculture (FTA), which includes four multidisciplinary departments (Tropical Crops and Agroforestry, Sustainable Technologies, Animal Husbandry and Food Production in the Tropics, Economics and Development) with 60 years of experience in tropical and subtropical agriculture, rural development and sustainable natural resource management. FTZ has several research collaborations and more than 50 successfully implemented development projects in Africa, Asia and South America under the EU Trust Fund for Africa, Czech Development Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SlovakAid, etc. In the framework of the Czech Republic’s development cooperation, the FTZ implements projects in all programme countries focusing on rural development, agri-food value chains, waste management, natural resource management and education in agriculture, animal and food sciences.
